RSPB's Northern England region is recruiting for seasonal contract staff to monitor the breeding attempts of Hen harriers in the Forest of Bowland, North Tynedale in Northumberland and on the RSPB's Geltsdale reserve in the North Pennines.

We require two Species Protection Assistants whose main purpose of the role will be to prevent disturbance/destruction of nesting harriers on the RSPB's Geltsdale reserve by being a very visible presence around the boundaries. As the season progresses, the priority will be to spot breeding behavior and identify territories, with the aim of finding nests and establishing 24 hour watches over them.

The successful applicants will have a sound knowledge of upland bird ecology, experience of bird surveying and working in the uplands.

The RSPBs hen harrier work is supported by a four year Heritage Lottery funded grant, United Utilities and SITA Environmental Trust.

£12,000 to £14,500pa (£5,000 - £6,041 pro rata)

Hours: Full time
Contract: 5 months (up to 5.5 months Northumberland)
